Salama: An Expansive Understanding of Safety
ISP’s flagship curriculum, Salāma, draws its name from the Arabic/Swahili term salāma (سلامة), which transcends the English “safety” to embody wholeness, integrity, and preservation, rooted in the triliteral s-l-m (س-ل-م), a semantic field encompassing peace (salām) and freedom from harm. Unlike a mere absence of danger, salāma signifies an active, multidimensional state of being unharmed—physically, morally, and spiritually—reflecting a vision shared across language traditions. In trauma recovery, this framework shifts focus from pathology to stewarding intactness, framing healing as the preservation of coherence and generative resilience amid adversity.
